Many of us suffer chronic neck pain and/or shoulder pain - and no wonder. We spend hours each day hunched over computers and steering wheels, slumped on trains, sofas and bar stools, rounding our shoulders and so helping to cause the musculo-skeletal disorders that are such a feature of modern life. Once damage has been done, even reaching for something on a high shelf can be painful.

It doesn't have to stay that way. Many neck and shoulder problems result from poor posture, bad ways of moving and the strain produced by repetitive activities such as playing certain sports or just decorating the house.

By using Pilates to improve your posture and movement habits, you can solve the underlying problem and alleviate the sort of impingement that can be the cause of chronic pain. Pilates can also provide the good muscle balance and strong ligaments that are needed to keep the shoulder joint stable and healthy.

Everyday anxiety is a problem, too. When we are stressed, the first place we feel it is in the neck and upper shoulders. Because these tensions can build up with time and contribute to muscle imbalances, simple relaxation is one of the key principles of the whole Pilates method.
